According to a recent study by the University of Maryland, nearly half of black males are arrested by age 23. A multitude of other statistics show that, on average, black men in America lag behind their counterparts of other races/ethnicities in a wide variety of ways. Shirley Perrymond of Lumpkin has authored a book -Just One, Giving Hope to Imperiled African American Males
- in which she explores this dilemma and searches for solutions.
She notes that the complexity of the issue has been well documented, but that there are ways to help. The book includes a look at her own efforts, which include the Youth Community Theater (YCCT).
