Murder - Plea Deal and Innocent Verdict

 Two Buena Vista residents recently had their time in court to face charges of murder in the 2020 death of Nicholas Smith, 40, also of Buena Vista.
 One of the defendants accepted a plea deal of voluntary manslaughter, while the other was found not guilty of murder or any of the other serious charges he faced, instead being convicted only of making a false statement.
 According to information from the Marion County Sheriff's Office, it had been discovered that Smith was shot twice in the back and killed when a deputy responded to a 911 call about shots being fired on March 2, 2020. He was found lying in the back seat of a vehicle and pronounced dead.
