The Marion County Commission got an earful from a room packed with concerned citizens in a special called meeting last Wednesday, May 28. As previously reported, the county was mandated by the state to reassess the value of property and that revaluation resulted in official property values soaring.
Property owners asked many questions about how the values were determined, as well as how it will affect their tax bills.
Comments on the higher values - which have basically doubled (in some cases more) - included:
"You're driving people out of their homes, out of their farms," and "We're about to get kicked in the teeth."
Another concern was that some residents may decide to take advantage of the higher values by selling their homes and moving....
