Small, independent pharmacies are in jeopardy. Why?
It's not because there's no demand for their services. In many rural areas across the country, including ours, these are the only pharmacies that exist for many people. So, it would seem that opening a pharmacy in such an area would be a successful business venture.
However, those pharmacies are currently fighting to stay alive. Thousands across the country have already closed.
Ironically, the way our healthcare system treats these pharmacies is what is driving them out of business. Rather than making it easier for them to operate in underserved areas, the deck has been stacked against them.
