The first part of the old saying, "March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb" proved very true for the region, as heavy rains took their toll last Friday, March 8.
The nearest data point listed by the National Weather Service is Columbus, which showed 3.11 inches of rain, but the nearby rural counties got much more. Area residents who checked their personal rain gauges reported rainfall from 4 to 6 inches.
Such an amount of heavy rain over a short period wreaked havoc and washed away portions of many roads. Most of the damaged roads were dirt, but there were also cases where rain washed enough of the foundation around paved roads for them to have damage, too.
