The Schley County School System, like many across the state, had a dramatic drop in third grade reading scores as a result of the Covid-19 crisis. Schools were closed and students were forced to remain home and participate in remote learning.
In order to improve reading scores, the Schley County Family Connection Collaborative received a $34,000 federal grant that focuses on children ages 0-8 years of age. The grant provides supplies, incentives and the Ferst Readers program to about 250 Schley County children, ages 0-5, who attend Babies Can't Wait, Tri-County Head Start, The Play Zone Daycare, Pre-K, and Peach Care, and those that receive WIC.
Each child receives a free age-appropriate book and parent activities newsletter mailed to their home address each month....
